Al0Qaida leader Ayman al-Zawahiri, who was suspected of being killed in November 2020, has appeared in a shocking 60-minute video.
It seems that rumors of Zawahiri’s death were greatly exaggerated. Zawahiri’s video was posted on the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks and seemed to be intended to spread demoralizing propaganda.
The U.S.-based SITE Intelligence Group first raised the alarm about Zarahiri’s reemergence. While the evidence indicates he is alive, there are some factors that cast doubt on that notion.
Back from the dead
SITE director Rita Katz took to Twitter to say, “Amid rumours of his death, Al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri shown in a new 60-minute video, this time offering some evidence that he is not dead – particularly, reference to events after December when rumors of death surfaced.”
If the new video is to be believed, it appears that our intelligence agencies have failed the American people, yet again.
Katz pointed out that “intelligence agencies have, as of yet, offered no proof or solid assessments that Zawahiri is dead, leaving the question of his current status in the air.”
According to the FBI, Zawahiri succeeded former al-Qaida leader Osama Bin Laden back in 2011. Unlike his predecessor, Zawahiri seems to be a bit better at avoiding the United States.
Zawahiri’s reemergence should kick off a fresh round of questions about how capable our intelligence agencies truly are. Our intelligence has already failed us to some degree in Afghanistan, and many believe it is time for heads to roll.
Of course, Americans shouldn’t hold their breath waiting for accountability. President Joe Biden seems committed to allowing failure and mediocrity to go unaddressed.
U.S. is losing against terrorists
The United States has experienced loss after loss in recent months, and terrorist groups, such as the Taliban, have grown bolder than ever.
Zawahiri likely chose this time to come out because of the 9/11 anniversary and because of the rise of the Taliban, creating a safe area for him to hide from the United States, as former CIA director Leon Panetta recently warned, according to The Hill.
The United States has never looked more incompetent, and President Biden will have to answer for that.
