Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has vowed to respond to the border crisis impacting his state.
As the Biden administration faces accusations that it has failed to adequately address the situation, Abbott reportedly ordered the Texas National Guard to arrest migrants who illegally cross the border from Mexico into his state.
“An ongoing and imminent threat”
According to the Daily Wire, the governor’s order came on Tuesday in the form of a letter to the Adjutant General of the Texas National Guard Maj. Gen. Tracy R. Norris.
“Beginning on May 31, 2021, I have issued multiple proclamations certifying under Section 418.014 of the Texas Government Code that the surge of individuals unlawfully crossing the Texas-Mexico border poses an ongoing and imminent threat of disaster for certain counties and agencies in the State of Texas,” Abbott wrote.
In response to the situation, he declared that “more manpower is needed — in addition to the troopers from the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) and soldiers from the Texas National Guard I have already deployed there — and DPS needs help in arresting those who are violating state law.”
His letter included the assertion that he has the legal authority necessary to issue such an order.
“By virtue of the power and authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the State of Texas, I hereby order that the Texas National Guard assist DPS in enforcing Texas law by arresting lawbreakers at the border,” he added.
Numbers signal worsening crisis
This month is projected to register another record-breaking month of illegal immigration along the southern border.
Though the final numbers have not been released, Customs and Border Protection has indicated that some areas have apprehended more than 20,000 migrants per week and the monthly total could top 1 million.
For its part, the Biden administration has sought to blame a range of factors for the immigration surge.
Meanwhile, President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris continue to face accusations that they have not done enough to stem the tide.
Such perceived inaction has led GOP leaders like Abbott to take their own actions. Of course, such state- and local-level efforts are inherently limited by the fact that officials do not have federal resources at their disposal.
