Texas Gov. Abbott charges President Biden with lying about efforts to combat cross-border human smuggling

An abandoned truckload of mostly dead illegal migrants was found near San Antonio, Texas, Monday, and President Joe Biden issued a statement of condemnation against the scourge of cross-border human trafficking that undoubtedly resulted in those horrific deaths.

According to Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R), though, President Biden and his own lax border policies are largely to blame for that terrible tragedy that occurred in his state, Fox News reported.

Abbott charged Biden with essentially lying to the American people about his purported deep concern for the exploitation of migrants by human trafficking organizations given the fact that Biden’s policies in terms of a nearly wide-open border with minimal interior enforcement of immigration laws have given those same traffickers free rein to do their worst.

Biden issues statement in response to tragic smuggling deaths

According to CBS News, the death toll currently stands at 53, though more than a dozen remain hospitalized with heat-related injuries, after local and state authorities discovered an abandoned truck near San Antonio with “stacks of bodies” in the trailer.

There was reportedly no evidence of any water or air conditioning for the several dozen migrants crammed into the trailer, some of whom were children, and authorities have reportedly made at least arrests of suspects believed to be part of a smuggling operation that was responsible for this truckload of illegal migrants.

President Biden on Tuesday issued a statement that expressed condolences for the tragic loss of life and condemnation for the smugglers and traffickers who most directly placed those individuals’ lives in peril.

“Exploiting vulnerable individuals for profit is shameful, as is political grandstanding around tragedy, and my Administration will continue to do everything possible to stop human smugglers and traffickers from taking advantage of people who are seeking to enter the United States between ports of entry,” Biden said in reference to both the deadly incident as well as those, such as Abbott, who have criticized his policies as playing a role in the tragedy.

Abbott says Biden is lying about addressing human trafficking

Gov. Abbott, however, was taken aback by President Biden’s statement, and said Tuesday night in an appearance on Fox News, “The thing that struck me … [Biden] said is he doing everything possible to stop human smuggling. That’s a lie.”

“He has stopped doing everything that had been done to address human smuggling,” the governor continued of the president. “He has defunded and inadequately funded Border Patrol. He has dismantled ICE. He has eliminated all of the border security efforts that were put in place by President Trump.”

“It was just a year-and-a-half ago when we had the most secure border in decades and today we have a worse human smuggling problem than ever before,” Abbott said.

“These people who lost their lives, they did so because President Biden has empowered and emboldened the cartels to do exactly what you saw happen,” he added. “It’s a tragedy and it’s not going to stop until Biden begins to enforce the laws passed by Congress and the United States of America.”
